Executive search demystified
Executive search, or headhunting, works by targeting individuals in specified companies who are likely to have the skills and experience required for the job. As a jobhunter, you cannot guarantee to get yourself headhunted, but you can make this more likely.
Get yourself in the headhunter's sights
Send your CV to search consultants operating in your field. Raise your profile within the industry by:
- getting your name in articles, company literature, directories and as a contact on the website
- speaking at conferences
- taking on a role in your trade body
- Keep your personal network active and strong, by maintaining contacts with ex-colleagues, business school alumni organisations, etc.
Responding to the headhunter’s call
Recognise the signals – not all ‘personal callers’ are trying to sell you something you don’t need! If it is not convenient to talk, ask the consultant or researcher to call you back at a more suitable time or place.
Be prepared to encapsulate your track record, current situation and career plans in a concise manner.
Don't let flattery mislead you - it might not be the job for you.
